Effect of a lipid fraction from human saliva on serum calcium levels and leukocyte numbers in rabbits.

A lipid fraction was obtained by extraction with chloroform-methanol (1:1 .v/v) of "the S-precipitate"prepared from whole human saliva by one precipitation.This fraction produced leukocytosis, but not hypocalcemia , in rabbits upon intravenous injection. Saliva-parotin-A purified from the S-precipitate possessed both hypocalcemic and leukocytosis-promoting activities, which remained unaffected after extraction with the chloroform-methanol mixture. The leukocytosis-promoting activity of salivaparotin-A was far stronger than that of the lipid fraction. These results suggest that the protein moiety of the molecule of saliva-parotin-A is responsible for the above two activities.
